CHARGE Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects multiple systems in the body. It is characterized by a unique combination of features that can vary in severity from person to person. The acronym CHARGE stands for the different systems and features that may be affected:
- Congenital Coloboma of the eye: This refers to a malformation of the eye that occurs before birth. It can affect different parts of the eye, leading to visual impairments.
- Heart defects: Many individuals with CHARGE Syndrome have structural abnormalities in their heart, such as ventricular septal defects or tetralogy of Fallot. These defects can range from mild to severe and may require medical intervention.
- Atresia of the choanae: Choanae are the passages that connect the back of the nose to the throat. In CHARGE Syndrome, these passages may be narrowed or completely blocked, leading to breathing difficulties, nasal congestion, and an increased risk of respiratory infections.
- Retardation of growth and development: Children with CHARGE Syndrome may experience delays in physical growth and development. This can manifest as slow weight gain, delayed milestones (such as sitting, crawling, or walking), and intellectual disabilities.
- Genital and urinary abnormalities: Some individuals with CHARGE Syndrome may have underdeveloped or abnormal genitalia. They may also experience urinary tract abnormalities, such as kidney malformations or urinary reflux.
- Ear abnormalities and hearing loss: Ear abnormalities are common in CHARGE Syndrome and can affect the outer, middle, or inner ear. This often leads to hearing loss, which can range from mild to profound.
In addition to the major features mentioned above, there are several other symptoms that can be associated with CHARGE Syndrome:
- Cleft lip and/or palate: Some individuals with CHARGE Syndrome may have a cleft lip and/or palate, which can affect feeding, speech, and dental health.
- Tracheoesophageal fistula and/or esophageal atresia: These are conditions where the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus (food pipe) are abnormally connected or blocked, leading to difficulties in swallowing, breathing, and digestion.
- Facial palsy: Weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles may occur in CHARGE Syndrome, resulting in asymmetrical facial expressions.
- Skeletal abnormalities: Some individuals may have skeletal abnormalities, such as curved spine (scoliosis), rib abnormalities, or joint contractures.
- Neurological issues: CHARGE Syndrome can affect the central nervous system, leading to various neurological problems, including developmental delays, balance and coordination issues, and intellectual disabilities.
- Feeding difficulties: Infants with CHARGE Syndrome may have difficulties with feeding due to choanal atresia, cleft lip/palate, or weak sucking reflex.
- Immunodeficiency: Some individuals with CHARGE Syndrome may have a weakened immune system, making them more susceptible to infections.
It is important to note that not all individuals with CHARGE Syndrome will have all of these symptoms. The severity and combination of features can vary widely, even among individuals with the same genetic mutation.
