Celebrities with Noonan Syndrome

What famous people have Noonan Syndrome? Find out which celebrities, athletes or public figures have Noonan Syndrome.

Noonan Syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the normal development of various parts of the body. It is caused by a mutation in one of several genes that are involved in the RAS pathway, which regulates cell growth and differentiation. Noonan Syndrome can cause unusual facial features, short stature, heart defects, other physical problems and possible developmental delays1. Noonan Syndrome is relatively common, affecting 1 in 1000 to 2500 live births, making it the second most common genetic disorder after Down Syndrome2.

Although Noonan Syndrome can affect anyone, some celebrities have been diagnosed with or suspected of having this condition. Here are some examples:

  • Frankie Muniz. The actor and musician, best known for his role as Malcolm in the sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, revealed in 2012 that he has a mild form of Noonan Syndrome. Although he was never officially diagnosed, he had many of the physical features associated with the disorder, such as a low-set hairline, droopy eyelids, a wide nose, a small jaw and a short neck. He also had poor vision and dyslexia. He was often bullied as a child for his appearance and learning difficulties. He used his music as a way of expressing himself and inspiring others.
  • Francisco de Goya. The famous Spanish painter and printmaker, considered one of the greatest artists of all time, may have had Noonan Syndrome. He painted a portrait of a boy with a striking resemblance to himself, who had many of the signs of the disorder, such as a large head, low-set ears, a wide nose and a short neck. The painting is called Los pobres en la fuente (The Poor at the Fountain) and dates from 1787. Goya also suffered from various illnesses throughout his life, such as deafness, vertigo and mental instability.
  • Jackie Evancho. The singer and actress, who rose to fame as a child prodigy on America’s Got Talent, has Noonan Syndrome. She was diagnosed at age 8 after undergoing genetic testing. She has some of the physical traits of the disorder, such as a small stature and a heart murmur. She also has scoliosis and needs to wear a brace to correct her spine. She said that she does not let her condition define her or limit her abilities.
  • Jason Buehler. The professional wrestler and actor, known by his ring name Jason Blade, has Noonan Syndrome. He was diagnosed at age 2 after having heart surgery. These are just some of the celebrities who have or may have had Noonan Syndrome. They show that despite their condition, they were able to achieve success and recognition in their fields. They also serve as role models and inspiration for others who have Noonan Syndrome or any other disability.
