Alfie

my son Alfie was born at 29 weeks due to severe pre eclampsia, he was 2lbs 5oz.

He had 3 lung collapses, was vented until day 6, then cpap then hi flow and by day 11 he was in air! He did need the odd trickle post feeds until around 35w gestation and was resuscitated a couple of times.

He was discharged at 36+4 a still tiny 4lbs 1oz and he had just been diagnosed with stage 1 ROP in his right eye, we had to go back 2 weeks later and were not worried at all.

Unfortunatly when we returned his ROP had progressed quite severely, to stage 3 with plus disease in his right eye and stage 2 in his left.

He was sent for emergency surgery at BCH where they treated both eyes.

He had regular checks since (firstly they were every 2 weeks, then monthly, then every few months and now it's every 6m and should eventually go to yearly!)

he has had no problems since, at his last check they did say he might be on the cusp of going short sighted, and if we have any worried to go back before 6m.

He is 21m old and doing amazing :)
