My story - aspergillosis

I am a 17 year old female, I have always had a difficult time in life. From being 3 weeks old and suffering with severe eczema which has never gone away. However that’s something I’ve learned to cope with, and learned how to deal with the pain of cut open, dry and weeping skin all over my body. From the age of 2 I developed asthma, which had also been a problem. In my opinion, I think different factors in life have a huge effect on the future. I have been on 3 different types of immunosuppressants for my eczema, which never worked. I was under Oldham hospital for this and they decided to refer me to Salford royal, where I am waiting for my second appointment.

In September 2019, I had my review at the chest clinic. The time before they took some blood tests. My nurse checked them and her reaction really scared me. She told me that my bloods came back at over 8,500 for Aspergillus, which she said is incredibly high. From there on I have been seen at Wythenshawe Hospital by prof denning. They have started me on Itraconazole and I’m hoping to be better soon. Being so young and having a condition that can really impact your day to day life is extremely scary, but I hope I can get past this.

It’s a struggle thinking of all the times doctors and nurses could have found this out. I always have a cold, always sneezing and have been put in hospital once with suspected sepsis and the second time pneumonia. I wish they would have looked into it more, and tried to find it sooner. But I can’t complain, I’m getting better, I hope and this won’t affect me like my other conditions have.
