Living with Celiac Disease

I was sick for 10 years before my diagnosis, being misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia. For the first two years I didn't understand cross contamation. I thought I could take the burger off the bun. As I became more careful, I became more sensitive. I was on vacation and got exposed to gluten three days in a row. I became so ill I couldn't keep food down. Misunderstanding family thought I was anorexic/bulimic. For three more months I battled nausea and forced myself to eat because I was losing weight. I learned about cross contamination and how to avoid it. I stopped eating anyone else's food. Period. I took my own food everywhere, and 90 percent of the time I still do. It took nine more months to get well. Now I feel great. No more fibromyalgia symptoms. I never knew that aching legs and brain fog and fatigue were due to celiac - I thought I had two illnesses. Fibromyalgia was just a name to give my symptoms when they couldn't figure out what was wrong. I am so happy to know the cause and be able to avoid it. Sometimes I get frustrated because it has made me sensitive to other foods. Then I remind myself how blessed I am that I am no longer in pain and fatigue and constantly nauseated. Life is good.
