PSC is inflammation in the biliary tree of the liver resulting in strictures and narrowing of the ducts. As the ducts close, the liver stops functioning normally. Eventually the damage causes cirrhosis of the liver and the patient will require a liver transplant. There is no known cause or cure, though it is closely linked to inflammatory bowel diseases.
