The rib cage does get very tight with a.s thanks to inflammation on the cartilage between the ribs this can also cause stabbing pain and been unable to take full deep breath. So far I haven't found anything that has helped me with this apart from taking shorter breaths and not doing physical activities until it has passed. X

Anti inflammatory Meds such as naproxen can help if you have costochronditis (not sure of the spelling). This is the inflammation in the cartridge round the ribs, can be very painful. Also try an anti inflammatory diet, I find sugar is a big trigger for me so I avoid it. I follow a fasting diet and found this has helped an awful lot.

I have had multiple ankylosing areas  in my Lombard and thorasic spine.  As a child I stated out with environmental allergies and ashma where breathing never seemed to improve with off and on shots thought adulthood. I am 61 yrs old and three years ago was tested for celiac desease and "food allergist that was never offered by previous Allergist's. Negative for celiac (biopsy' of esophagus) and positive for allergies to wheat, peanuts & walnuts.  I was sent to a pulminologist afterwards who found the right mistomoter..  Between ellimentating the foods I was allergic to and the right medicine I now breath very well.  When tested for celiac it was noted that I had developed a hiatal hernia which was why cold chicken and other foods were sticking in my throat... Water washed it down, but with the ashma both were a pain to deal with.  #1. Get tested for food allergies. #2. If you haven't already, next blood test have them include a reading on Vitamin D levels.  #3.. Go to a pulminologist, as they can determine what is causing your breathing difficulty, re allergies or Ankylosing Spondylitis.  Good luck, I hope you learn quickly what is going on, as we all know multiple issues can be taking place....not only with the systemic nature of A.S.  And these other issues, like alleriges to food leading to leak or Inflammatory gut,  could be a long term trigger to the autoimmune Spondylitis.  Diabetic is also a whole body inflammatory conditions involving sugar or food intake.  So pay attention to your gut feeling is...

I have ankylosing spondylitis, degenerative disc disease, oa, ra, psa, sarcoidosis, IBS, and fibromyalgia and the list goes on, and on. The worst thing you can do is to stop doing things.  You need to practice deep breathing - keep those ligaments lumber....keep em moving.  Same with the rest of the body - it is THE only way to combat these illnesses.  I am 54 - have been sick all my life.  Been on more meds than you can count - all making me feel sicker...  I am currently on no man made drugs after years of being a guinea pig.  I am just finishing my professional personal trainer certification and am a certified psw.

I can can tell you for certain that a major reason why people end up in long term care facilities is because of the lack of physical strength, balance and flexibility - all of that IS within each of our control.  It takes mental dortitude to separate yourself from the pain, and do what needs to be done.  If you can make yourself make some simple lifestyle changes you will feel the difference within a few months.

I do not have COPD or asthma.  I do, however, have AS and live with someone who has the others.  Deep breathing exercises are going to be your best bet. Also your pulmonologist may need to look at which medications you are using.  Nsaids do help to lower inflammation, but I think if you are in a flare and your ribs are constricting like with costochondritis (not just inflammation of cartilage, but also tendonitis of the ribs.  And ribs have a LOT of tendon.) you may be better served with a prednisone taper.  COPD is also inflammatory.  I have been on tapers and even low dose long term usage for my AS.  My bf is on maintenance 10mg and also is tapering down from 90mg twice daily after a scary ICU stay.
