Idiopathic Anosmia

Year Condition Began: 1994

I was diagnosed with anosmia approximately 15 years after it happened. It’s presumed to be a gradual, idiopathic Anosmia because I have no clear memory of when or how it happened. Several things happened during the time period which could have caused anosmia. It never occurred to me to tell a doctor not did any doctor ever ask me about my sense of smell. It came up accidentally when I was seeing a new family doctor for the first time. When asked if there was anything else he should know about me, I told him I couldn’t smell in a rather embarrassed and apologetic way. His reaction and interest in this surprised me. Ultimately, though the investigation was cursory and no further help was given or encouraged. The lack of awareness and interest or even help and treatment is what motivates me to continue on my anosmia learning journey.
