CD Vs NCGS Vs Ulcerative Colitis

Year Condition Began: 2005

I initially developed ulcerative colitis and was being treated for it by physicians at a major university medical center, but none of the medicines were working. I began keeping a food dairy to determine if there was a trigger food that was making my UC worse. The long and short of it is that I discovered that gluten containing foods made me ill. Simple things like Rice Crispies, egg noodles, whole wheat bread and soy sauce made me ill within minutes. I searched on Google for what these things had in common and discovered it was "gluten".

My PCP told me it was "impossible" that gluten was an issue for me, but had to agree that a gluten free diet could do no harm. So I tried it. Within three days the brain fog I'd been experiencing lifted. Within a month the stiff muscles and joints stopped happening. The fatigue was gone. And two years later on my next colonoscopy the UC had gone into remission and has never again flared.

I've been on the diet since 2005. The only time I get ill now is when I'm accidentally cross contaminated. I react very quickly to gluten exposure. The diet has been a Godsend!
