A Guillain-Barre Syndrome story

May 19, 2017

Going to take you back to January 2015. It's Sunday, January 11th the day after my birthday. I started feeling sick, had flu/cold like symptoms, for the week, the following week January 18, my symptoms changed a little, still sick an not eating much of anything. Started feeling a little weak, an having night sweats, really I was feeling miserable.. The next week January 25, my symptoms changed an I had come down with a cough, that I've have gotten often so I didn't think much of it, I was eating cough drops like candy to try to help with it, really anything I tried didn't help this made it more difficult to sleep at night, this lasted for the week, so by February 1st my symptoms changed drastically, on Monday February 2nd I had taken myself to the ER. I was really weak an having major trouble standing an walking, the gave me an IV, an pumped me up with fluids, I was told I was dehydrated, an on top of everything thing I also had a sinus infection, that I didn't really know I had. ( I was treated for the sinus infection an for being dehydrated). For the week I really started feeling weaker an weaker, my mouth felt numb, ( you know that feeling when you go to the dentist an they numb your mouth), that's what it felt like, I thought it was from the cough drops.. It took me much longer to get ready for the day, my feet felt wired but really I didn't think much of it until I got out of the truck an fell an hit the ground. (I hit it pretty hard), during this time my mom was in the hospital (in Utah) on February 9th I was to head up to Utah, an needed much help, thank goodness for the help I did get. ( hubby had to curbside park the truck to help me in to a seat, an go get someone to help me). At lest it wasn't a long flight an I didn't have to change planes... made it up to Utah an that's when things got a little crazy. Still February 9th, I had gone to the hospital to see my mom, I wasn't by myself I had my amazing cousin with me, (she also picked me up from the airport an brought me dinner that I couldn't eat much of) I then was wheeled up to my mom room, (I was sitting in a wheelchair). My dad then told my cousin to take me down to the ER ( yes I went not wanting to really go) I then went through a series of testing, an was trying to figure out what was wrong, the last final test they was a spinal tap, ( can I just say that hurt ) I then was taken up to the 14th floor (witch we called the penthouse floor or better yet room), I then got IVIG for the next five day ( treatment took about 6hrs) the diet they had me on was yuck (if you have ever feed a infant/toddler then you'll know that's about what I was eating) alright not quite like that but there was no flavor to the food an it was mostly soft foods.. but with GBS it a facts your eating, breathing an everything else. I had to relearn how to walk with a walker, an a cane. While I was in the hospital my mom was still in the hospital she was on the 5th floor in ICU, (I fought to stay out of the ICU knowing that I could have been there). After my treatments I was able to be taken down to see my mom (it was mostly in the evenings around 8-9pm). My amazing uncle would came to visit an he made me take the walker an walk down (we took a wheelchair too), he did this every time he came to visit. I had OT, PT working with me, by the end of the week February 14th I was done with treatments an was on my way home, February 15th I was back on a plane (had help) an back to getting to what is my new normal.
