On March 21st, my doctor called me at 8pm and told me I had preeclampsia and to go to l&d.  I was 27 weeks pregnant with my first child and up until that point I had a very uneventful pregnancy. I was put on hospital bed rest and spent the next 5 days getting blood pressures taken, non-stress tests, biophysical profiles, and giving blood and urine samples.  On March 24th I made it to 28 weeks.  My blood pressure was out of control, even with 4 meds, and my baby was in distress.  I was put on a surgical lite diet, strapped to a non-stress test monitor for constant monitoring, and ordered to get some sleep.  By the 25th my bp was stabilized and my baby was back to being fine.  I gave another 24-hour urine sample and expected the results the morning of the 26th.  They hadn't arrived by noon on the 26th, so assuming no news was good news I set to eat lunch.  As I was finishing my nurse came running in and told me to stop eating.  My sample came back and I was 17,000 MG of protein in my urine.  My kidneys had all but shut down.  If my platelets were high enough, they were going to wait until 8pm before delivering. My platelets were 105, and below 100 I would not be able to have a spinal, so we rushed to an emergency c-section.  I had developed Class II HELLP on top of severe preeclampsia.  By 2:16 my son was here, weighing 2lbs 3oz and 14.5 inches long.  The next day I continued to get worse.  I had trouble breathing, with my o2 sats in the mid 80s, and my platelets had fallen to 48.  I was on magnesium sulfate for 48 hours, and it was 4 days after his birth before I got to fully see and hold my son.  I'm so glad we have both made it this far.  He turns 8 weeks old tomorrow. Our doctors were on top of things and took him out at the best possible time for him by waiting until my body could no longer help him.
