I have had type one for 16 years, and met so many incredible people that I could not imagine my life wihout because of this disease. It also terrifies me as I watch friends and loved ones expereince complications from the destructive nature of the illness. I have a very love/hate relationship with my diabetes, and try to find peace daily.
I am the project manager of T1D Exposed, the Nude Diabetes Advocacy Calendar. www.t1dexposed.org The mission of the project is to promote awareness, connect people living with type one diabetes (T1D), and fundraise for both local and global diabetes organizations. Living with T1D changes a person's body, and theT1D Exposed calendar features tasteful nude portraits of individuals embracing those changes and their lives with type one.
In this year's calendar, each participant is showcasing a passion in their portrait. T1D is part of their lives, but is not the single story of their fascinating existence. It can be so hard to shed the clothes and shed the shame that is associated with our bodies. Type one bodies can be beautiful, diverse, capable, and embraced. Each day we have to choose how we will view and use them.
