A Factor V Leiden story

May 4, 2017

I developed my first DVT at the age of 19. I had just had surgery, was on birth control and smoked. The doctors told me my clots were so severe, from my ankle to my groin, that I would either die or lose my leg. I'm still here and still have my leg. I took coumadin for 6 months because the doctors thought the clot was from the combination of things going on. 6 months after I stopped coumadin, I developed my 2nd DVT. Instead of seeing the cardiologist I had originally seen, my primary doctor took over. He put me on coumafin and sent me for testing. We found out I have 5 genetic blood clotting disorders. The most fun is Factor V which is homogenous. I developed my 3rd DVT a year later while on coumadin. So far, that's been my last DVT. I am on anticoagulants for life. I have lost 4 children, 3 due to my blood clotting conditions. I have a healthy child, but it took being on 6 months of bed rest and a cesarean a month before he was due to have him. None of my other family members have had issues with clotting, I seem to be the lucky one.
