A Multiple Chemical Sensitivity interview .

Paul's interview

How did all start?

After many years of having reactions to an occasional perfume, I was subject to a chemical spill in 2008 which left me more sensitive to perfumes and now laundry products. After several years of struggling with that, I was subjected to frequent triggers on a daily basis and it was affecting my employment. I saw an allergist and was prescribed an inhaler which increased my sensitivities exponentially, making me sensitive to the smallest trace of chemical off-gassing from things like glossy printed papers, laser copiers, dried latex paint, cleaning products, etc.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

I was diagnosed with Allergies by an allergist. A few months later, my chest disease doctor mentioned MCS but he gave the diagnosis of asthma

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

I have been treated for Asthma but it was not useful at all.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

Avoidance is the best treatment for healing. In emergencies, I nebulize with Glutathione.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

Breathing in the presence of other people and places outside of my home. With some exposures, I will have brain fog and dizziness.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

My world has become smaller. Those who are reckless with their laundry and beauty products distanced themselves from me. Divorce.

What things have you stopped doing?

I had to leave my place of employment and I don't have contact with many of the people I used to get together with. I used to use my voice a lot, but it is unpredictable now.

What do you think about the future?

When my life settles down I have the ability to relax and control my environment, I will improve beyond what I have to date.

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

I have enjoyed my careers in electronics, audio, video, music, TV and Radio. It's hard to narrow it down to any time period.

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

Without MCS, I would like to go back to work and spend more time outside of the house and go to entertainment venues/events. Maybe travel a bit.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

It has been an Interesting life.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

You should find a place where you can control your environment and be at peace if possible. Reach out to others with the same condition and share information and resources and know you will get better if conditions allow. Although the chance of complete remission is not guaranteed, be grateful for small steps.
