A Narcolepsy interview .

Kerri's interview

How did all start?

Noticed in college that I could not stay awake for classes and definitely could not stay awake for late night study sessions. Nothing helped me to stay awake.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

Yes, finally got diagnosed around age 35 and got medicine. I was afraid I was going lose my job if I did not get diagnosed and get medicine.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

Medicine - Nuvigil. I used to take Provigil. Now I take Nuvigil 150 mg. twice a day. It has started losing its effectiveness lately. I used to not take it on weekends or on days when I didn't have to stay alert, but have gotten where I need it on weekends to enjoy social activities.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

Staying awake! :) Working is starting to be a real challenge.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

no real effect.

What things have you stopped doing?

reading - I cannot read more than very short articles. Reading a book is almost impossible because I can't stay awake. I can listen to audio books and stay awake better, because I can do other things while listening to the audio book so I don't have to be still.

What do you think about the future?

I wonder how much longer I can keep my job.
