Found lump while studying breast cancer

I'm writing for my 21 year old daughter who was in her last semester of nursing school when she discovered a lump in her left breast. Her senior project was on breast cancer awareness and she had been working on building silicone breasts with marbles in them and a presentation that would go to women in India to reach them breast health. Gods timing was perfect as she was more aware of her own breast.

We live in an isolated community (pop 25,000) 125 miles north of Loma Linda university where she ultimately ended up for biopsy and treatment.  In our local town, she saw a physician's assistant who sent her for an ultrasound.  The technician who did it did not say a word during the exam which was our first indicator that it was not good.  The PA then referred her to Loma Linda for a core biopsy. The pathology report was sent back to the PA.  She called my daughter the day before her graduation (BSN) and told her it was an FA, and that no follow up was necessary.

We were elated, graduation was amazing and 2 weeks later when she was home, I suggested she pick up the pathology report.  It clearly stated that the mass favored benign Phyllodes tumor over fibroadenoma. I spoke with the PA who stated that they were on the same spectrum, no big deal.  

It was difficult to self refer to a breast clinic but because her biopsy had been done priorly there, they did accept her.  She saw a wonderfully informed doctor who recommended a partial mastectomy, which she had 2 weeks ago. Surgery was great, very little pain,or bruising.  The incision runs under her breast and will not show much if it all.  Only hard part was that the tumor was too close to the chest wall/muscle that she was not able to get as wide of margins as she would have liked to.

At her follow up appointment she was given 2 choices. The first was to have more extensive surgery, cutting muscle.  The second was to wait 6 months and have another ultrasound.  She chose to wait.

So that's what we are doing....
