A Visual Snow interview .

Eimear's interview

How did all start?

I have had the static for as long as I can remember but I started to develop many other symptoms in the last six months. I found out what visual snow was in November 2017.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

I do not have a formal diagnosis yet but my doctor has only recently found out what visual snow is and he believes it exists.

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

I have tried normal pain killers for the migraines and that didn't work, so when it started to have an effect on my studies I went to the doctor and he gave me migraleave. They didn't do anything for me so last week (16/03/18) my doctor gave me preventers to take at night and they have not fully eliminated the migraines but they are not as frequent or severe as they were in the past.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

The most iseful thing has been the preventers and if I get pain in my neck a hot water bottle reduces it.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

Migraine and brain fog. They have both had an impact on my grades and no matter how hard I try to study I have to do it with 10× more time and effort than anyone else.

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

My social life has changed greatly as I can't go out with my friends as much as I'd like to because of the migraines.

What things have you stopped doing?

It has stopped me from participating in PE, one of my favourite classes because I get a really bad migraine during it.

What do you think about the future?

In the future I hope that we can find a cure for visual snow and raise awareness of it as most people with the condition didn't realise that it wasn't normal for a long time, just as I did.

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

I think that the best year has been this year. Although it's had it's ups and downs at least I know that I'm not alone.

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

I would get out more and get involved in more sports.

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

It didn't go as planned, but thats ok.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

I would tell them not to worry, there are other people out there with visual snow who are willing to help.
