Story about Medullary Sponge Kidney .

Pregnancy induced kidney stones

Jul 30, 2018

Year Condition Began: 2018

I was officially diagnosed with MSK in February 2018. I passed my first kidney stones in May of 2012 when my oldest child was 5 months old. They were too large for me to pass on my own so they required surgery. I had a ureteroscopy and the surgeon punctured my ureter accidentally while trying to go up and clean out my kidney. They had to cut me open and stitch me up.

With my next pregnancy in 2013 I passed 7 strones and had minimal kidney problems. I had a procedure (can't remember the name of it) done in 2014 where they checked the output of each kidney against each other and they were within normal range.

My pregnancy in 2015 was pretty hard. I suffered a subchorionic hemorrhage at 9 weeks and was put on modified bedrest for a month while that healed. I passed about 15 stones and a bunch of sand. The night I passed the sand and several larger stones I went into preterm labor. I was 30 weeks. I was put on hospital bedrest until she came 2 weeks later, 8 weeks early. I passed several more stones while in the hospital.

When she was about 6 months old I had a lithotripsy done because I had several stones and pain in my right side.

I knew my 4th pregnancy in 2017 would be rough from the beginning. I was passing stones by 13 weeks and I passed an average of 1-2 2mm or larger stones per week. There were several weeks that I passed sand-like stones every time I used the bathroom. My stones caused consistent contractions almost daily for months. Miraculously, I made it full term and delivered a healthy baby boy.

I was diagnosed with nephrocalcinosis in October of 2017. I had 2 lithotripsies at the end of the year, one on each side. Ever since the last one, I've had constant pain in my right kidney. I saw a nephrologist for the first time in February 2018 and he diagnosed me with MSK.

I seem to only pass stones when I'm pregnant or shortly after. I still have constant kidney pain. Some days are better than others. I rarely have days where it impedes my daily life. I'm just keeping up my water intake and I'm grateful for minimal bad days.
