Swimming with the kids

Feb 7, 2019

Year Condition Began: 2019

I went swimming on New Years Eve with my kids in our HOA pool, woke up New Year's Day with some redness on the side of my pupil, so thinking there was no point in trying to call a doctor (every office is closed on New Year's Day), I pulled out some old pink eye drops and started using them (which I now know was a BIG mistake). They seemed to be keeping things from getting worse, but since the drops were expired two years ago I thought I should seek a new prescription, so on January 3rd (Thursday), I got worked into my GP's nurse. Somewhat thankfully, she just said I had some sort of eye infection and there was evidence of a scratch on the cornea that was healing as well, gave me a prescription, checked my sight and off I went. As my cousin and I got together that day, my symptoms were getting worse rapidly - I had stopped taking the pink eye drops and my eye was flaming red in several locations, light sensitivity, and pain... I finally went to the pharmacy to get the prescription filled and she prescribed EAR drops.... which led to two hours of calling the office, then calling the after hours line, and eventually getting prescribed Ofloxacin by someone who'd never examined me. I used it that night and by morning I lost ALL confidence and felt much worse. I called my husband and told him there was no way I could go through the weekend in that pain without knowing that I was given the right medication. I got worked into triage at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at UCI and thank GOD I was, and somehow I landed in the hands of a Cornea Fellow and Opthalmologist, Dr. Mina Farahani, who immediately diagnosed AK and did 10 cultures on my eye, called and begged but couldn't get the right medication as the only person who compounds it locally was still on vacation. So she started me on neomyacin drops and ointment and we had to wait until Tuesday, Jan 8th, to finally start chlorhexamine and PHMB. I had my confocal microscopy done January 11th and we found and confirmed my diagnosis, again... So now I've had 3 cornea experts all diagnose my condition.
