Im guessing my symptoms began in 2010, I was getting major headaches which only seemed to subside when I rested my head. At the time I took this to be either stress through work or blood pressure, I visited the doctor on many occasions but was only offered drugs to lower the blood pressure and kill the headaches. I have also lost my sense of smell and taste (not sure if that has anything to do with the cyst), I would suffer from flashes of light within my vision, a bit like the edge of a puddle where light was more intense. It was a scary time to live in my shoes, I distinctly remember our white board meetings at work where issues within the work would cause my blood pressure to rise and inturn my vision to go weird. Im sure people looking at me must have thought I lost the plot, I couldn't stand still and would pace backward and forward trying to calm my mind. I quite my job as a department supervisor (for which I loved), I renovated my house and moved back to England along with my wife and son to start a new life. Once in England I started making appointments with with the various health professionals in order to get myself back on my feet, one being getting my eyes checked out. My vision has been getting worse and worse over the last 5 or so years so I was in need of glass's. The optometrist reported the findings back to my doctor who requested I go to the local hospital to meet with a specialist, after meeting with him on two occasions he wanted me to go through a MRI.
I got THE call on a Thursday afternoon saying they found something in my brain but wanted me to meet with a neurosurgeon, the very same evening I had a phone call from a Mr Sarash one of the neurosurgeons from Newcastle royal Victoria infirmary wanting me in that very same evening, of course I was shocked and made a appointment to meet with him on the Saturday morning. after meeting with mr Sarash he scheduled me for surgery for the following wednesday. he explained the cyst was deep inside the brain, he could get it and would proceed with the surgery via craniotomy. I was a rare genetic disorder 3 in a million people suffer from this they say. My cyst was 1.7mm (im understanding this to be pretty large) and had caused pretty server hydrocephalus. IT WOULD KILL ME he said. The surgery was in may 2017, I was signed off sick. the day I was released from hospital I had a eviction notice from my landlord, no reason just wanted his property back even though our arrangement was paying six months in advance and even after explaining my current plight they still wanted to proceed. My wife being a accountant and not even being able to find a data entry clerk job put added pressure on our decision to move back to the United States before we spent our savings and make our life again. My wife has a job, my son is at school and doing really well. We are living with the inlaws until I can get back on my feet, the journey has been stressful, bitter, yet enlightening. I feel we have been swimming with great whites and now we are back on board ship. I have a great BIG THANK YOU for my family, it’s vital to have this support.
