In late 2016 I discovered a lump in my left breast. I was terrified and have had poor experience with doctors for other various things in the past. I decided to wait on it until I could work up the courage to get it checked out. I finally went to my primary care physician and she ordered an ultrasound in March 2017. Both my primary physician and radiologist were positive it was a fibroadenoma, so I was relieved. My options were to keep getting ultrasound follow ups or have a biopsy or surgical excision. When my 6 month ultrasound came up, I decided to go back to my primary care doctor and ask about having it removed. The location was only a few inches below my clavicle and it was very noticeable to me every time I looked in the mirror. When I saw the surgeon, he was pretty confident it was a fibroadenoma too, but mentioned it was possible it could be a very rare type of tumor. I had my lumpectomy in Nov 2017, and the diagnosis came back as a low-grade Phyllodes tumor with fuzzy margins; which led me back to surgery again, 2 weeks later. I am now recovering and waiting to hear the details and the plan is for me to be closely watched every 6 moths. I have an excellent surgeon and medical team that has made this process so easy, I can't be more thankful! I am also a PhD student at the phase of dissertation and am hoping maybe I can integrate this experience into a part of my research by studying individuals with this type of tumor.
