lulu's interview

How did all start?

The first episode of aquagenic urticaria that I recall was when I was around 10 years old, I was at the beach with a new friend and she asked me if I had been bitten by a jellyfish because I had a rash when I came out of the water. I just explained to her it was normal for me and it always happened, although I got quite itchy. My mum also has it, so it has always been a "normal" thing to have.

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

I don't, every doctor I have seen denies the existence of aquagenic urticaria.

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

I have been treated for Endometriosis and PCOs, using the pill. It works perfectly for me.

What have been your biggest difficulties?

My biggest difficulties were with Endometriosis and PCOs mostly, as I had to be bed-ridden for 2 days every month when I got my period, having to skip school or work.

What things have you stopped doing?

I don't really enjoy going to the spa, or to the swimming pool. When I was younger I cared most of what people would think when they saw me all red, nowadays I just think of the itchiness of the rash- going to the spa is not a relaxing activity for me.
